Connecting geography teachers across the world: the International Geography Network
One of the things I value most about our brilliant geography community is the willingness of teachers to share ideas, ask questions and learn from one another. The new International Geography Network (IGN) aims to make those connections easier for geography educators working in international schools.
The network is a collaboration between the Geographical Association, Discover the World Education, GeographyPods and Geographyalltheway. It brings together colleagues who may teach in very different places, but who share an interest in developing strong geography curricula and helping students make sense of the world.
There is huge value in having this collaboration space for international schools. Teachers in these settings can draw on the places and perspectives represented within their school communities. They also face questions that are best explored with others working in similar contexts.
The IGN plans to offer an online space for sharing ideas and resources, online TeachMeet-style events and regional, face-to-face meetups. It also aims to strengthen the voice of international geography teachers within the wider geography education community, including at the GA Annual Conference. These are opportunities for colleagues to contribute their own experience as well as learn from others.
As a GA Trustee, I’m really pleased to see this global subject community network taking shape. Geography helps our young people understand connections between people, places and environments. It is therefore very fitting that the teachers who teach it have more opportunities to connect across borders too.
Membership is free for geography educators working in English-medium international schools, whether they are new to international teaching or have many years of experience.
